Good morning all,
Two weeks ago here in Canberra a young mum was murdered in an horrific way. She has three children, most devastatingly a tiny baby girl who was one week old at the time of her death. A crowd funding campaign was launched, with $99,000 raised as of today’s date.
I am coordinating a quilt drive – my aim is to give one quilt to each of her three children and one for her sister, who was badly injured in the attack, and one for her current partner. I spoke with Molli Sparkles, who coordinated the #SewingforSydney drive to create quilts for the families of the Sydney siege. He has graciously allowed me to use his hash tag tutorial for the blocks, and he’s also donated the orphan blocks from that quilt drive to start the ball rolling. I have also been in touch with one of Tara’s friends, who has let me know that these quilts will be greatly appreciated.
How can you help?
Make some hash tag blocks to donate
Molli’s hash tag tutorial can be found here. Please use a white background for the blocks, with a bright solid or blender for the hash tag. If you choose a blender, please make sure it ‘reads’ as the colour, eg is predominantly that colour.
Make a heart block for the tiny baby girl’s quilt
The colour scheme for the baby’s quilt will again be bright colours on a white background. Please make any heart block you would like to on a 6½” block. It can be pieced or appliquéd.
I am also looking for people to donate backing fabric, and long-arm quilters who would be willing to quilt these after they have been pieced. If you are able to help in that way, I would love to hear from you.
Things to consider
1. Please make sure you use a consistent ¼” seam for the hash tag blocks. The blocks finish at 5½” and a consistent seam allowance makes all the difference. You might want to make a test block first.
2. If you would like to make more than one block, please consider making a variety of colours, not a number of similarly-coloured blocks.
3. Don’t spend a huge amount on postage; just pop them in an envelope and send them to me.
4. Please send your blocks by 30 April.
Where do I send my blocks/fabric?
Please send them to me:
Linden Vine, PO Box 7269, Kaleen, ACT, 2617.
Is there anything else I can do?
Thank you everyone; I look forward to receiving some lovely blocks so we can make some fabulous quilts for Tara’s family.
