Good morning everyone; welcome to the Aussie Aviatrix Quilt-a-Long! I am so very excited to be hosting my first quilt-a-long, with this fabulous pattern.
When Elizabeth Hartman released her Aviatrix Medallion earlier this year I knew I had to make it, and I knew that Emma Jean Jansen’s Terra Australis fabrics would be perfect. So, I approached both of them with the idea of hosting an Aussie Aviatrix Quilt-a-long and I am so pleased to say that they both very graciously said yes. Elizabeth has also kindly donated three PDF patterns as prizes, and Emma has generously donated a fabric bundle prize and will also be judging entries in the QAL.
So, how is it going to work? Well, today is an introductory post to introduce the pattern and fabric as well as give you the schedule. I’ll also be introducing you to the brilliant bloggers who will be sharing the blog hop with me. I’m so excited to introduce them to you – they are all lovely people and excellent quilters and I can’t wait for you to meet them. So without further ado, I give you the Aussie Aviatrix Quilt-a-long.

Purchasing the Pattern
A PDF version of the Aviatrix Medallion pattern can be purchased from Elizabeth Hartman’s shop. While you’re there, have a look at some of her other great patterns. I really love the new Preppy Whale and Fancy Fox.
Purchasing the Fabric
As I mentioned, I’m using Emma Jean Jansen‘s brilliant Terra Australis 2 range for my quilt. I’m actually making one with the original Terra Australis as well but for the purposes of this QAL, we’ll stick to TA2. Emma has very generously offered a discount of 10% for all QAL participants who purchase the full TA2 bundle from her shop from today until 1 October. To take advantage of the offer, go to her shop and enter the code AUSMEDAL10 at the checkout when you purchase the full TA2 fat quarter pack. We’ll be using 25 fat quarters for the quilt top and I’ll be using the other seven FQs for a pieced backing.
What if I want to use different fabric?
Of course, please do. Each of our bloggers is using a different fabric so you’ll get to see this fabulous quilt in a number of different ways. Elizabeth Hartman has written a very helpful blog post about fabric selection for the quilt; I would encourage you to it even if you’ve already chosen your fabrics.
At the end of the QAL, I will open a linkup here for all your finished quilt tops. Don’t worry if you haven’t quilted it by then! Emma is going to judge them and award some pretty fabulous prizes. Emma has donated a fabric bundle, and Elizabeth Hartman has donated three PDF patterns. Alison von Bibra from the Cotton Factory has also generously donated a one-month membership to either her Anna Maria Horner or Tula Pink fabric clubs (winner’s choice).
Where to from here?
I’ll pop in next Monday to give you some of my tips on cutting – it does take a fair while to cut all the fabric out which is why I’m giving you a few weeks to do that. I’ll also have an interview with Elizabeth Hartman for you.
I’m looking forward to seeing your progress – when posting to social media, please use the hashtag #aussieaviatrixqal. Please also use #aviatrixmedallion so that Elizabeth Hartman and others can see your work too.
Have a great week; see you next Monday!
